The weekend will include everything from the first parade of summer to other favorites such as games of strength and endurance, the traditional sheepherder's picnic and Saturday night's popular dance featuring local artist/drummer Martin Maestrejuan.
A traditional Basque breakfast will follow Sunday morning.
Saturday's parade will kick off the annual culture fest beginning at 11 a.m. down Winnemucca Boulevard. Opening ceremonies will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Winnemucca Convention Center followed by performances and contests from 12:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A Weight Lifting Exhibition will hold festival-goers' attention, along with plenty of delicious Basque chorizos, which will be available all day.
From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., a festival favorite - the traditional sheepherder's picnic - will be served up on the convention center lawn. Locals and out-of-towners can enjoy lamb stew, steak and solomo sandwiches, salad, beans, bread and dessert. All menu items will be sold ala carte.
That evening, from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., the convention center will be transformed into a dance hall with rock and roll band, "Soul Serene" featuring Winnemucca native Martin Maestrejuan. Cover charge is $6.
Sunday morning at 9 a.m., mass will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church.
A traditional Basque breakfast will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Winnemucca Convention Center. For $12 per person, the Winnemucca Basque Club will serve up chorizos, jamon, morcillas (blood sausage), mashed potatoes, fried eggs and French bread while local Basque dance groups provide the morning's entertainment.
