WINNEMUCCA - A small wildfire fanned by winds broke out close to the Mote exit on Interstate 80 on Dec. 30 around 11 a.m. According to Valmy Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Morrison, the fire was extinguished in short order by Valmy and Battle Mountain crews.
Morrison said that two Valmy engines as well as two engines from Battle Mountain were more than enough to control the fire. The Nevada Department of Transportation was also on scene for traffic control.
Morrison said less than one-fourth of an acre burned along the side of the freeway. The cause of the fire was theorized to be from a blown tire or chain producing a spark that ignited the dry roadside brush.
Morrison stated that there were no injuries to personnel.
