Wild horse gather planned for Sheldon wildlife refuge Sept. 9

The target for next week's roundup is to remove 400 horses

WINNEMUCCA - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will begin gathering approximately 400 wild horses from the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northern Humboldt County as part of its ongoing management actions.

According to the USFWS, there are approximately 830 feral horses within the Sheldon NWR, which was created to provide habitat for native species such as pronghorn antelope and sage grouse. The purpose of the gather is to restore refuge habitats by removing wild horses in an effort to meet the refuge management plan's objective of removing all feral horses and burros from the Sheldon NWR by 2017.

Animals will be gathered, transported, sorted and shipped for adoption consistent with the Sheldon NWR management plan.

To conduct effective and efficient operations, to improve safety for the horses and to ensure public safety, portions of Sheldon NWR surrounding the gather operations, including some roads, will be closed to the public during the gather.

Anyone interested in adopting Sheldon horses should contact Carr's Wild Hose & Burro Center at (615) 654-2180 or rpcarrfarm@aol.com or J&S Associates at (601) 546-2555.[[In-content Ad]]
