Congratulations to Sheriff Ed Kilgore. As Humboldt County's top law officer, he not only runs a great shop, but he understands his job, his duties, and above all else he understands the Constitution of the United States of America, and all that great document represents.
Vickie Rock's labeling Sheriff Kilgore as "king" might just require a brief review of history. She notes: " ... constitution was written well before we eventually created our military forces," which seems to be her basis for suggesting we need to now establish new and stronger controls over firearms.
I would rather strongly suggest that the men that were under General Washington, which comprised this fledging nation's military force, which were outmanned in every fashion by the British would take some exception to that statement.
I would further suggest that essentially all modern day politicians, as well as all the rest of us, should take a good look at the Second Amendment. The driving force that caused the great men, who ultimately paid so dearly for writing the Constitution, as well as the original amendments, including the Second, was not recreation, was not hunting, and was not even protection of home and property.
No, it was fear of losing the very liberties that so many patriots paid the ultimate price to gain It was the fear of eventually returning to one form or another of tyranny. They clearly knew that a well-armed citizenry was the best defense against any such action. That was true in 1791 and it is equally true in 2013.
We have had presidential administrations that have begun to more commonly use Executive Orders to bypass Congress in recent years. President Obama has brought this technique to a new level. There is every reason to believe he was, or may yet, attempt to bypass Congress by enforcing his vision of firearm control by Executive Order, regardless of the legality of such action. He clearly knows that he can not infringe on the rights of the citizenry by gutting the Second Amendment through Congress.
Sheriff Kilgore is absolutely correct in placing the President on notice that these illegal actions will not be tolerated by the top law enforcement in this county. Thank God for Kilgore, and the thousands of other county sheriffs across this great nation that are taking similar action.
