What happened to the Nixon Opera House?

You have to fight! I read in The Humboldt Sun that the city budget had been approved.

It didn't quite balance but there was a surplus, so no harm, no foul. Hey, a million dollars was approved as a capital expenditure for the proposed Boys and Girls Club, a worthy cause.

I do have one question though. While the city and county were experiencing a surplus during the so-called mining boom, why were no funds designated for the much-needed performing arts center?

A performing arts center is also a worthwhile cause and would benefit every aspect of our community:  economy, education, tourism, children, adults, culture; the list goes on.

I have only been here eight years but since we first arrived, I have heard over and over from people in our community about the Nixon Opera House.

Why hasn't it been replaced? There is insurance money but the excuse is that it's not enough.

Why haven't those funds been supplemented by the city and county?

It seems that there are powerful, influential and, certainly, very vocal people in the community who are opposed to the venture. What puzzles me is "Why?"

This would only benefit our community, draw numerous visitors and probably new residents. Why?

If you want a performing arts center in Winnemucca you have to fight. Come on, Winnemucca! Fight!
