BATTLE MOUNTAIN - On Dec. 16 everyone welcomed a warm, sunny day. The Senior Center celebrated with a Christmas dinner. Four hams were cooked and sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, salad and rolls were included in the dinner. Apple cobbler was served for dessert. Everyone thought the dinner was very good.
The Senior of the Year is announced at our Christmas dinner. The award this year was given to Dorothy Beetler. She has been active in helping with craft projects, keeping the scrapbook up to date, she is friendly with all, and we have all enjoyed the carrots and rhubarb that they share from their garden. Dorothy was presented with a blue jacket, head scarves and dinner out for two. Her husband, Bob, is usually at her side helping her with her projects. We wanted this to be a surprise to her and everyone. Congratulations, Dorothy.
A nice surprise at the dinner was Ila Shepherd and her family. They were Shirley Shepherd, Jodi Moore, her granddaughter, and Satica Pipkins, her great granddaughter. Everyone was willing to pose for a picture with Ila. Many others had family and friends with them also. It is always good to see and visit with friends.
The raffle was held right after dinner. Judy Cox was the winner of the red wood carved bear and other gifts. Reese Artz, the son of Tamra and Randy Artz, was the winner of the beautiful quilt, painting and other gifts. Congratulations to both Judy and Reese.
We try to earn money to help a couple of seniors at Christmas time, we donated to Safe Haven Rescue Zoo, and Our fireman's raffle. We want to buy a big new clock for the center so everyone can easily read the time. We also try to save for a trip or two during the next year. We want to thank those that helped support the raffle.
Most of the seniors aren't making New Year's resolutions. Maybe it is because we have made too many in the past and know their outcome. Lois Smith said that she heard about a lady that took one word and tried to remember that word each day of the upcoming year. Lois thought she might try this with the word, peace. This sounds like a good idea.
Sandi Smith, Senior Center director, stated she would like to get some new linoleum for the kitchen and some new windows for the center. Hopefully, the windows will help with the heating bills.
Ervin and I have some angus feeder steers on pasture. They are gaining well, but the pasture sure does need rain. The menu looks good for the rest of the month. Hope to see many of you out for lunch at noon. Happy, prosperous, New Year to everyone.
