The Tri-County Fair, rodeo, and concert was the program for this past week's Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Martin Hotel. The fair and rodeo is now less than two weeks away. WCVA and Ag-3 Director Kim Petersen and the staff of both the convention center and the events complex at the fairgrounds work throughout much of the year to make sure everything is in place for the three-day fair scheduled this year for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29 - 31. The carnival that always accompanies the Tri-County Fair will open after school (4 p.m.) on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Some of the preliminary preparation for each year's fair involves an evaluation of attendance at each of the events and activities at last year's fair in an effort to determine whether to continue with the same programs and events, or to do some change-ups to attract more people to the fair.
Starting two years ago, WCVA and AG-3 gave the go-ahead to include a concert as the main Saturday evening event for fair weekend. Concert-goers have given very positive reviews of the concerts, and ticket sales for the two past concerts have been good, according to Petersen, but not the "great" they were hoping for.
This year's concert features two performers Petersen and his staff are very excited about. Petersen said Chris Young is a country singer whose star is continuing to rise with a recently-released single moving up the charts.
Opening for Young is singer songwiter Courtney Cole, who may be famliar to viewers of "American Idol" and "Country Music Superstar." Doors open at the Winnemucca Events Center at 6:30 p.m., Courtney Cole will perform at 7:30 p.m. with Chris Young following.
"It's going to be an awesome awesome concert; if you've been waiting until the last minute to get your tickets - it's now the last minute," Petersen said.
Ticket prices range from $35 to $50 and Petersen said there are still some great up-front tickets available. They're now on sale at www.winnemucca.com or at the convention center. Petersen said tickets will be sold the day of the event for cash only.
The main change-up for this year's fair is to the rodeo portion of the event, according to Petersen. This year for the first time, organizers chose a rodeo focused solely on the three most popular rodeo events: bull riding, bronc riding and barrel racing. The "Bulls and Broncs Rodeo" is meant to ensure plenty of tightly-packed action, said Petersen. It starts at 3 p.m., earlier than usual for a rodeo, to make it possible for everyone to enjoy the event and go to the Chris Young concert that follows.
Although the rodeo and concert represent ways the Tri-County Fair has changed in the last few years, Petersen emphasized that the fair still includes all the traditional events as well - a carnival, pig wrestling, the 4-H youth livestock show and sale, Western Art Roundup, truck and tractor pulls, and the best of a hometown county fair.
