WCVA adds burn out contest to Fifties Fever festivities

Contest will take place Sunday

Fifties Fever participants and observers will have a new attraction to look forward to this year since the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority has added a burn out contest to the weekend's festivities.

A burn out contest consists of drivers staying in place while burning out the tires on their cars and then taking off.

Special Events Coordinator Darrel Field said he hopes the event will keep the street drag racers in town another night to participate in this new event.

Sign ups will for the contest will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 27 on Traders Way. The actual event will begin at noon at the same location. Field said he expects up to 20 participants to enter into the contest. The only requirement for entering is that each driver must be registered with Fifties Fever. The entry fee for the weekend package is $35.

The contest will be judged based on several things like how much smoke is created and general crowd appeal. The first place winner will receive $500 and a trophy and the second place winner will receive $250 and a trophy.

The 22nd annual Fifties Fever event is scheduled for July 25-27 this year. Street drags will take place Friday and Saturday and are hosted by the Northern Nevada Racing Association. The car show and various "show 'n shines" will take place all weekend at various locations. The event is open to all vehicles, with five classes for modern cars. The event will also feature live music, a parade and a $500 poker run.
