WINNEMUCCA - It took a little while for the Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade volleyball team to get going on its home floor this past Saturday.
The Warriors (4-2 overall, 4-0 Tri-County League) started slowly against Pershing County in their opening match en route to a 25-14, 25-7 and 25-11 win. Winnemucca continued to cruise from there, easily beating Battle Mountain 25-9, 25-15 and 25-12.
"The girls were playing in slow motion to start off due to playing how their opponent was," said WJHS head coach Mary Kay Pace. "It was much different from playing Fallon just a couple of days before. I was very pleased that the girls put it together. They set it up and charged to the ball, played tough and just put it away. We had some missed serves that gave Lovelock and Battle Mountain some points. I was extremely pleased to see us being aggressive."
Olivia Silva was 33-for-34 serving for the day. Brooklyn Waller and Annaleise Gabica also had strong serving days for the Warriors, according to the coach.
"I was very pleased with my setters (Tiana Herrera), Amaya Herrera, McKenna Jones and Brooklyn Waller, they have done an outstanding job of getting the ball for us to hit," she said.
Pace added that Kaity Sample is doing a good job with her hitting and serving and that Audrey Snow is all over the floor for the Warriors.
Winnemucca closes out its season today in Lovelock with the Tri-County championships starting at 10 a.m.
"It was another week of improvement for us and the other teams are getting better and their serves were stronger this time," Pace said. "Our opponents are still having some trouble passing. I knew their serves would be better and that is great for us. It wasn't anything that we could not handle. I have a pretty talented group and they want to learn the game. I have seen some growth and I'm hopeful we will see the same thing this weekend."
