Warren Ray Holt, 78, passed away in the company of his son and daughter on Sept. 14, 2011, at Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Ray was born in Paradise Valley on Oct. 29, 1932, to Ralph and Gertrude Holt. He attended the Paradise Valley School, Winnemucca Grammar School and Humboldt County High School. He has been a proud resident of Winnemucca, where he and his wife Judy (Scott) Holt married on Oct. 16, 1963, and raised their family of three.
Ray served his country well from 1950 to 1953 as a young Airman with the United States Air Force 824th Supply Squad including nearly 8 months overseas. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Upon his return he worked in California and Nevada for the Western Pacific Railroad and was a dealer at several casinos. Ray returned to settle in Winnemucca where he worked as a Teamster truck driver until his retirement. Ray was a recent volunteer van driver for the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System.
Ray was a colorful character who always welcomed a visitor, never shied away from a political debate, and could fill a conversation with an immense knowledge of a wide range of names, facts and details. He had a seemingly intractable recollection of people and memories. He was an eager observer of life, quick supervisor of any project, and a consummate humorist who loved to tell or hear a joke of any caliber. Ray enjoyed baseball, fishing, hunting, airplanes and long drives.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Judy, brothers Richard "Dick", Harry, Tim, Lloyd Russell "Rusty", Leonard, Walter, and sister Mildred "Millie" Lovelace. He is survived by his brothers William H. "Bill" Holt, of Winnemucca, and Maxwell "Bud" Holt of Reno, daughters Lori Dawn Holt of Winnemucca and Joy Noel Holt of Charleston, S.C., son and daughter-in-law William S. "Bill" Holt & Kim Calnan-Holt of Spokane, Wash., grandsons Rylan Morley Holt, Tegan Liam Holt, and a granddaughter on the way. He also leaves behind many kind and caring nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1:00 pm at the Community Church in Paradise Valley. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made in Ray's honor to the Steve Adams Golf Scholarship c/o US Bank, 180 Bridge St, Winnemucca, NV 89445 (775) 623-3606.
