Fans of cold noses and wagging tails have an opportunity to help raise funds for the pups at the Animal Control Shelter by joining in the Walk and Wag 2K at the Winnemucca Community Garden. The Community Garden, located at 151 McArthur Avenue, is hosting the event Sept. 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and it features a two kilometer run/walk, splash pools, an agility course, and meeting adoptable shelter dogs. The route begins and ends at the garden and dogs of all shapes and sizes - and their owners - are invited to participate.
Adoptable dogs from the shelter will be available for a meet and greet for those looking to add a family member into their home. Two dogs were adopted after the Walk and Wag in June, and Morgan Troike, director of the garden, said she is hoping more dogs will be adopted this time.
After the walk, four-legged participants will get bandanas, treats and water. Two-legged participants will be served light refreshments.
About half of the proceeds from the June 8th Walk and Wag event were used to buy four raised beds for the dogs at the pound. The beds keep the animals off the cement floor in the winter and help keep them warm. The rest of the proceeds went toward the completion of the pavilion at the Community Garden. Troike said the money raised would once again benefit the animals at the shelter and the Community Garden.
The registraion fee is $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the walk. To register, call (775) 623-2333, email winngarden@yahoo.com or visit the garden's Facebook page. Representatives of the Community Garden will be available at Big R, 3270 W Railroad Street, on Aug. 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to pre-register participants and accept donations.
