During the month of April, individuals from three Nevada counties' Search and Rescue Units attended a six day extensive course on the Fundamentals of Search and Rescue Operations.
This training is a nationally certified course through The National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR). The course was taught by a member of the State of Nevada Department of Emergency Management (DEM) from Carson City.
Attendees of this course took part in five days of classroom training that covered a multitude of topics related to wilderness search and rescue. Some of the topics were:
•Survival in various elements
•Land navigation
•Search patterns and planning
•Incident command structure
•Legal aspects of search and rescue operations
•Tracking
At the conclusion of the classroom training and written exam, participants were required to pass four field-based scenarios to be deemed a SAR Tech Two Operator. Those that chose to be SAR Tech Three Operators were only required to pass the written test.
Nine members of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team completed the course as well as members of the Lander County Sheriff's Office SAR and Mineral County SAR as well. All members of the Humboldt County Team are civilian volunteers and receive no monetary compensation for the service they provide the county.
