IMLAY - On April 1, volunteers came out to Safe Haven Rescue Zoo to help start the construction of a new 10,000-square-foot enclosure.

Mark Miller and Jared Musgrave, from Barrick Turquoise Ridge, Brandon MacDougall and Ermelinda Galindo, from Coeur Rochester, Bruce and Leslie Luke from Rye Patch, Chuck Garbinski, from Gardnerville, and Safe Haven staff Lynda Sugasa, Melanie Stephens and Kelly Grenier, put 42, 19-foot support posts in 3 feet of concrete.

Despite cold and wind, volunteers and Safe Haven staff completed the project in just five hours.

A $15,000 grant awarded by Barrick Turquoise Ridge, $5,000 grants from Newmont Mining Corporation and the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, a $2,500 grant from NV Energy and a $2,500 grant from the Thelma B. and Thomas P. Hart Foundation all helped fund the project.

Safe Haven has been receiving many placement requests, especially from the Midwest. This new "Rescue Ready" enclosure will immediately provide space for emergency placements.

The new 10,000-square-foot enclosure will include an in ground swimming area, multi-level shade and climbing platform, enrichment post and other features that can house either big cats or black bears as Safe Haven has been receiving requests for both.

States that no longer allow the rehabilitation and release of black bears have contacted Safe Haven regarding permanent placement availability.

Two separate dens will also be added to allow placement of more than one animal that are compatible.

Safe Haven will be hosting many upcoming volunteer days to try to complete this new enclosure and have it available as soon as possible. For those interested in volunteering, please contact Lynda Sugasa at (775) 538-7093. Lunch and beverages are always provided.

On Marcy 27, Safe Haven hosted Battle Mountain's Eliza Pierce Elementary School field trip. More than 82 students, staff and parents visited Safe Haven, enjoying a PowerPoint presentation on native Nevada wildlife, a personal tour of the facility and Safe Haven's rescued residents, an enrichment demonstration and creating bookmarkers.

Groups of approximately 20 students rotated through each activity, until all of the students had the opportunity to experience all of them.

Eliza Pierce Elementary School now provides students a yearly Safe Haven field trip for those that have achieved specific academic achievements. Safe Haven visitation is available by appointment - call (775) 538-7093 to schedule a tour.
