VFW announces Voice of Democracy winners

VFW Post No. 12116 in Winnemucca announced the winners of the annual Voice Of Democracy contest for local high school students. This was an audio essay of three to five minutes on the topic of "Why I'm optimistic about our nation's future." VFW Junior Vice Commander Charles Stillwell, along with judge advocate Jessica Smith and ardent Kathleen Rehberg, presented the awards. Taking first place in the competition was Savannah Montero; second place went to Rebekah Goldblatt and third place was earned by Hayley Goldblatt. The first place winner's audio was forwarded to District 2 of the VFW. If her audio is picked it will go to VFW state competition with an opportunity to go on to national. At the end of this rainbow is a $30,000 scholarship. The VFW also announced its teacher of the year. The winner is Connie Stillwell, a special education teacher. "She is one more reason that  our district is one of the best in the state of Nevada," the VFW said.
