CARSON CITY - The Nevada state office of USDA Rural Development is accepting grant applications from nonprofits, communities, state agencies and federally designated tribes to assist development of small and emerging private business in rural Nevada. About $155,000 is available for eligible projects.
Projects should benefit small and emerging businesses that will employ 50 or fewer new employees, have less than $1 million in projected gross revenues, and support job creation in rural areas, where population is less than 50,000. Private businesses are not eligible to apply, but nonprofits associated with business development, communities, state agencies, public bodies and tribes are eligible.
In 2012, USDA Rural Development provided $172,000 in Rural Business Enterprise Grants to competing applicants.
As examples of eligible projects, the Western Nevada Development District received $20,518 for a revolving loan fund to provide micro loans for equipment purchases for rural businesses. The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony received $28,000 for technical assistance to promote small business development through NX Level business classes. The Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Tribe received $82,500 for technical assistance and training for the start-up of their new tribally chartered travel plaza on Highway 95 just south of McDermitt, which is scheduled to open this fall. Black Rock Solar received $40,982 to provide technical assistance to conduct energy audit training to rural tribal businesses in northern Nevada.
