Winnemucca Police Officers and Humboldt General Hospital EMS responded to a report of a man down along the railroad tracks near the East Winnemucca Boulevard crossing just after 7 a.m. on Sunday.
According to a WPD news release, the sighting was initially called in by an eastbound train.
Emergency responders provided life-saving efforts until the unidentified man was pronounced dead by the on-call physician. Coroners from the Humboldt County Sheriff's office were called and responded to the scene. The scene was secured and an investigation is in progress.
WPD Capt. Bill Dalley said it is unknown whether the man was hit and killed by the train or whether he was already dead when he was hit. The official cause of death will be determined by the coroner, he said.
The decedent's clothing may indicate the dress of a transient, however, his identity is still unknown, WPD said.
This is an active investigation. If anyone has information about this case, please contact the Winnemucca Police Department at (775) 623-6396 or Secret Witness at (775) 623-6969.
