RENO - The University of Nevada, Reno cheer team and the Associated Student of the University of Nevada (ASUN) released details of a contest this week to allow community members the chance to choose the name of a new female mascot. The mascot will be the third addition to the Wolf Pack family as the younger sister of current mascot Wolfie Jr. Any person may vote in the online poll with an active email address. Voters may choose one among six names compiled by a committee of students and faculty, and each name holds some significance to the University or state of Nevada.
• Ellie (named for the first location of the University of Nevada in Elko)
• Frankie Sue (named for the first female student body president)
• Luna (named for the Wolf Pack howling at the moon)
• Mackie (named for the University's largest and earliest donor)
• Sage (named for original Wolf Pack mascot and state flower)
• Sierra (named for Sierra Mountain Range)
The voting polls will be open until midnight on Sept. 21. The result of the vote will be released during halftime of the University's home football game against Air Force on Sept. 28. That will also be the first time the mascot's uniform is revealed.
ASUN was able to assist the cheer team in buying the mascot with the funds they receive from owning and operating the Nevada Wolf Shop. The student-owned bookstore generates revenues for ASUN into a capital fund that is used to provide scholarships, emergency tuition and textbook funds, and capital expenditures like this project. ASUN and the University cheer team see this project as an opportunity to get students excited about the idea of having a female mascot to represent women's athletics.
"In talking to students on campus, it seems that most people are thrilled about having a female mascot because it will help us represent everybody," Blue Crew President, Kavan Jeppson, said. "We just want every person on this campus to feel a part of the Wolf Pack family and this female mascot is the perfect way to make that happen."
