AUSTIN - Two people were honored by school board member Jan Morrison in Austin at a Christmas program held Dec. 13. Lander County School Board members choose members of the community to honor on a monthly basis.
For October, Morrison selected Deputy Derrick Zacharias. Zacharias has been volunteering and helping Austin youths for several years. He helps out whenever needed at the school, professionally and on his own time, said Morrison.
Each year, he presents Halloween safety classes for trick-or-treaters, and with the Lander County Sheriff's Department, sponsors coloring contests and other programs for the younger students.
Zacharias is also active in the Shop with a Cop program, making sure area youngsters have a merry Christmas. There are many other wonderful things, though less visible, that he does throughout southern Lander County in the course of his work, and beyond, to help the community.
We appreciate him so much and are lucky to have him and his wife, Kristi, members of our community.
For November, Morrison selected Kyle Hendrix, who has raised the bar for our students/athletes, said Morrison. His high expectations have led to good sportsmanship and professional behavior by our student athletes.
We have also received compliments from other teams, their coaches and even opposing team fans for the professional behavior and sportsmanship of our student athletes.
That speaks a lot about his coaching that folks unaffiliated with our school are impressed by the students. Hendrix has an ability to rise above any challenge and push himself harder to do his best for the students. He has also been wonderful about working with our staff to make sure he is on the right path, getting things approved, making sure he is doing the right thing, before moving forward.
He has been very flexible because it isn't always easy to get games with our co-ed team. So he's been flexible with his personal schedule and made sacrifices so that our student athletes would have game opportunities.
