LOVELOCK - The Nevada State Bank Relay for Life team has been a regular with the Lovelock event for a few years now. This year marks the third year the team's captain, Jeff Meyers, has also co-chaired the local event.
For the 2012 event the Nevada State Bank and the Lovelock Chevron have joined forces, making their team 22 members strong. The partnership between Chevron and Nevada State Bank is brand new to Relay this year, but Chevron was a sponsor of last year's Nevada State Bank team, Meyers said.
In addition to Meyers, other team members are Cindy Plummer, Sue Graham, Bill Graham, Cody Graham, Melissa McIntee, Shaun McIntee, Tate McIntee, Ashley Bradbury, Thomas Carr, Jose Carrillo, James Chapman, Jessica Elerick, Jeremy Graville, Cecelia Hanley, Kaylah Hanley, Kelly Happy, Virginia Lang, Kathy Poffenroth, Marisol Rosas, Kim Young and Hendrix Young.
"We have all had some kind of connection to cancer in one form or another, whether that means being a survivor or caregiver. Seeing those we love suffer through this disease is all the motivation we need to fight back," Meyers said, as to one of the reasons the team was formed.
The team hopes to raise $2,500 for cancer awareness and research this year. So far they have had two fundraisers. The first was the Grill-n-Suds barbecue and car wash on May 19, which raised $371. The second was a beer fest held at Whiskey Creek Saloon on June 1, which raised $265.
At the Relay for Life overnight event, which will be held June 22 at the Pershing County High School football field, the Nevada State Bank/Chevron team will incite a flamingo invasion, where the team can be paid to infest campsites with flocks of flamingos. The only way to rid the camp of the pest is to pay the team to send them into a different camp. The shenanigans should be a sight to see.
In addition, the team will be hosting a Dance Central station, tic tac toe and ring toss, and selling multiple items for both adults and children. They will also raffle off two 12.5 gallons of any grade gasoline from Chevron.
