WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County Hospital District Board of Trustees has unanimously approved new contracts for two hospital physicians.
Dr. Shouping Li and Dr. Sharon McIntyre will each serve the Humboldt County community for three more years, according to the new agreements.
Board members approved Li's new contract at their June meeting; McIntyre's contract renewal followed in July.
Humboldt General Hospital administrators said they couldn't be more pleased with the extended relationship.
"Dr. Li and Dr. McIntyre are valuable members of the HGH team," said CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish, "and we are thrilled that they have agreed to stay in our community for at least another three years."
Li joined the community in August 2007, bringing with him an extensive medical background. In addition to his family practice, Li is renowned for his work in cardiology. He is a fellow of both the American College of Cardiology as well as the American Society of Echocardiography.
He also holds a USA patent for compensated digital subtraction for echocardiography. Among his many awards and achievements, Li was awarded the very prestigious "Prize of Scientific and Technologic Achievement" by the Ministry of Public Health in China for his echocardiographic research in 1993.
Li is also the author of dozens of scholarly articles, book chapters and abstracts and is a much sought-after lecturer on Doppler echocardiography.
Parrish said the hospital is honored to have a physician of Li's stature on staff. "We have been very blessed through our association with Dr. Li," said Parrish, "not only for his ability to provide excellent family care to our community, but to open up a new area for us in cardiovascular medicine." Li treats patients ranging in age from infants to the elderly. "I'm here to serve the community," he said. "I can treat everyone from a baby's first visit to the doctor all the way to those with thick, thick files."
His office is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday in Suite A of Humboldt General Hospital's new medical office building, located at 118 E. Haskell Street.
To schedule an appointment with Dr. Shouping Li, please call his office at (775) 625-8585.
Dr. Sharon McIntyre joined HGH in August 2009. The family practice physician serves patients ranging from newborns to the elderly. That's one of the reasons McIntyre said she wanted to come to Winnemucca.
"I love rural medicine," she said. "It gives me the chance to do the full spectrum of family medicine."
She also joins Drs. Leonard Perkinson and Bradford Granath in providing obstetrical-maternity and delivery-services to the community, a position she is extremely qualified to fill.
McIntyre graduated from the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1992. Prior to that, she earned a bachelor of science in biochemistry and a master of science in immunology, both from the University of California, Davis.
It was while she was studying for her master's degree that McIntyre realized she wanted to attend medical school.
"I loved the life sciences," she said. "At the time I was transcribing [for a medical service] and I realized I was more interested in the clinical side of medicine than the laboratory side."
McIntyre continued, "From there, I became very excited about taking care of people and becoming involved in their lives, not only when they are ill, but additionally and at least as importantly, I wanted to promote their overall wellness."
In fact, she was so motivated to begin a career in medicine that she acquired her master's degree in one year by oral examination in order to begin medical school as quickly as possible.
"I loved every rotation that I did," she said. "From pediatrics to surgery, I didn't want to give anything up. That's how I arrived at family practice; it offered me a little bit of everything."
After completing her residency at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, Calif., in 1996, McIntyre worked as a staff family practice physician at Weed Army Community Hospital, Fort Irwin, California.
In July 2000, McIntyre went to work for the Plumas District Hospital in Quincy, Calif., where she was a staff family practice physician. Just prior to her coming to Winnemucca, she completed a post graduate family practice OB fellowship at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she added c-sections to her skill set and gained invaluable experience working with high risk obstetric patients and with perinatologists in Reno with whom she will continue to have a working relationship.
McIntyre is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
McIntyre's office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; she is closed on Wednesdays. Her office is located in Suite H of Humboldt General Hospital's new medical office building, located at 118 E. Haskell Street.

Parrish said both physicians have been welcome additions to Humboldt General Hospital. "Dr. Li
and Dr. McIntyre have served our community well," he said, "and we are looking forward to at least three more years of these positive relationships-and hopefully more."
