The "Mardi Gras of the West" returned to Winnemucca this past weekend, as the 33rd annual Paradise Valley Volunteer Fire Department 44-Hour Softball Tournament took place at the Winnemucca Sports Complex. Over 60 teams from around the West competed for three days in temperatures near 105 degrees for a shot at the men's and women's championship. Home Grown out of Sparks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Kim's Dreams/Gary's Carpets (Nampa, Idaho) for the men's title. BB's out of Nampa, Idaho, beat HTD (Sparks) in the women's championship. Winnemucca's Screwballs and Le French Twist were the Dawg Pound winners (the best of the worst). The 44-Hour Tournament is one of the main fundraisers for the Paradise Valley Volunteer Fire Department through 4-H and scholarships.
