WINNEMUCCA - Miguel Miramontes-Rodriguez was in Sixth Judicial District Court Nov. 26 for a pre-trial conference before his scheduled December trial on drug trafficking charges, but instead signed a plea deal which reduced the number of charges he is facing from 11 to one.
The potential sentence that Miramontes-Rodriguez faces is a minimum of two years to a maximum of 15 years in prison and a mandatory fine of up to $10,000 for one count of trafficking in a controlled substance level two.
Miramontes-Rodriguez pleaded not guilty to 11 trafficking-related counts in May. The charges were: one count of trafficking level one, four counts of trafficking level three, three counts of possession of a controlled substance for sale, and three counts of sale of a controlled substance.
After negotiations between parties, Miramontes-Rodriguez changed his plea and the jury trial that was scheduled for his case was vacated.
Miramontes-Rodriguez was arrested in January after a three-month investigation that culminated when Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Tim Raabe and his K9 Gripper stopped Miramontes-Rodriguez's blue Ford Mustang. According to a news release, Raabe had prior knowledge that the usual operator of the vehicle was Miramontes-Rodriguez and that he had an outstanding felony arrest warrant.
Upon stopping the vehicle, Miramontes-Rodriguez was identified as the driver and was arrested by TRIDENT detective John Dunckhorst.
During an inventory of the vehicle, TRIDENT detectives located and recovered approximately 112 gross grams of suspected methamphetamine.
As part of the ongoing investigation, TRIDENT detectives, with the assistance of the Winnemucca Police Department SWAT team, executed a search warrant at Miramontes-Rodriguez's residence in Winnemucca and located and seized approximately 141.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
Miramontes-Rodriguez's sentencing is set for Jan. 14 at 1:30 p.m.
