Trial called off for man accused of selling meth

WINNEMUCCA - A trial scheduled for next week for Winnemucca resident George Ledezma Navarro on drug-related charges was pulled off the district court calendar.

At a pre-trial conference Monday, it appeared time was running out to consider last-minute motions and pick a jury.

Public Defender Matt Stermitz said he was ready to go to trial. The district attorney's office said it could proceed but didn't have all the tests back from the lab.

"If the state wants to continue they need to file a motion and give us a chance to respond," Stermitz said.

Navarro has two separate cases pending in Sixth District Court and two separate trials were scheduled on those charges.

In one case, Navarro, 53, pleaded not guilty to the sale of a controlled substance and another felony charge.

Navarro is accused of selling an unspecified amount of meth to a confidential informant on March 8, 2011. The TRIDENT task force provided the informant with $200 to buy drugs from Navarro, according to court documents.

He also is accused of giving the confidential informant a quarter-gram of meth on March 16, 2011. In both incidents, the confidential informant was working in cooperation with the task force and was wired to pick up conversations.

In a separate case scheduled to go to trial in August, Navarro is accused of being under the influence of a controlled substance, which occurred in February of this year. He pleaded not guilty to that charge in April.

But in late-breaking developments, district court officials said Tuesday that another hearing was scheduled for Thursday involving Navarro. The hearing was described as a change of plea hearing.
