This year's Fair is definitely not a spectator sport. From blue ribbon creations to pie and watermelon eating, a few newer contests and a whole slew of old standbys will ensure that everyone gets in on the Labor Day fun.
This year will see the return of the Wilton Cake Decorating Contest. On Friday, August 29, area bakers are invited to showcase their best birthday cake in honor of the 93rd anniversary of the Tri-County Fair & Stampede-and the 150th birthday of the State of Nevada. This year's theme is "Happy Birthday Nevada." Pre-entry forms can be found online at www.LaborDayFair.com. Entries will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday in the Exhibit Hall. Three awesome prizes will be awarded!
Additionally, the Pie Eating Contest will take place on Sunday, August 31. Beginning at 3 p.m., contestants will hear, "On your mark, get set, go!" right before they attempt to attack their fill of delicious pie. Signups will begin at 2 p.m. by the Main Stage Outside. The contest is limited to the first 10 registrants in each age group, including 6-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-18 years and 19 and older.
Then at 4 p.m. Sunday, also on the Main Stage Outside, the Watermelon Eating Contest will get underway. You guessed it . . . the idea behind this one is to see who can eat the most watermelon in the least amount of time. Prizes will be awarded in four age groups, including 6-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-18 years and 19 and older. Signups begin at 2 p.m.
This year will also see the return of the Biggest Home Grown Contest. In this eighth annual competition, participants are asked to bring their most gargantuan homegrown fruits, veggies or crops to the Winnemucca Events Complex Exhibit Hall on Thursday, Aug. 28, between noon and 5 p.m.
Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in youth and adult categories.
