Torres receives USAA recognition

LOVELOCK - Pershing County High School junior Rosario Torres has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy (USAA) as a student of excellence in Social Studies.

According to a press release supplied by the USAA, the organization recognizes students upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and the Standards for Selection set forth by the academy.

Because of her 4.0 grade point average, USAA put Torres in the top 10 percent of all student nominees, countrywide, who might qualify for the academy's $10,000 scholarship award, or one of 400 scholarships of up to $1,500. Only students who have been recognized by the USAA may apply for these scholarships, according to the press release.

Torres was nominated for this recognition by PCHS teacher Barbara Buk.

"Rosario excels in Social Studies. She is truly an outstanding member of my class," Buk said.

Torres said that college is in her future plans, although she is still deciding which school she will attend. She hopes to go into psychology and/or writing after college.

"Attending college will help me with a brighter future," Torres commented.

Her plans for the summer are to get a part-time job and attend volleyball camp, she said.

Torres is the daughter of Lovelock resident Gil Gonzalez.

"I am so proud of her. This (recognition) will help her out with getting into a good college," Gonzalez said.
