LOVELOCK - Pershing County Senior Center Director Barbara Tobin has officially announced her retirement effective Jan. 1, 2014.

She has lived in Lovelock over 40 years and has been the director of the senior center for the last five years. Tobin said she plans to stay in Lovelock.

"I think Lovelock is a great place to live in and retire in," she said.

Tobin said she had mixed feelings about leaving the center.

"I've loved being at the senior center, but I'm ready for a less stressful lifestyle," she said.

"I have been director for five years and I think that is plenty of time for one person to be in charge. It will be exciting to have a new supervisor and see what new innovations will take place in the next five years," she wrote in the center's September newsletter.

She is still going about business as usual until January and has some fundraising plans for the senior center before she leaves.

Later this month, on Sept. 14, the center will hold a Company 31 purse and bag party. The company offers a variety of purses, bags and organizers that can be personalized.

"These would make great Christmas presents," Tobin said.

There are three ways to support the senior center with this fundraiser; attend the party at the center on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. Orders can also be made online at mythirtyone.com/krishadley. Tobin said to click on the My Parties tab and scroll down to the Lovelock Senior Center party to place your order. Orders can also be made by calling the Company 31 consultant Kris Hadley at (775) 530-9721.

During the Company 31 party a raffle will be held for a Choice LG Optimus Plus phone, including activation and first month of service. Raffle tickets are available at the senior center for $1 each. The phone and services were donated by Gail Munk and the Choice cellphone company, Tobin said.

Tobin plans to have the annual Christmas tree raffle this year.

"Start thinking about what your creation will look like this year," Tobin advises Christmas tree donors.

More information about the Christmas tree raffle will be made available at the center as the time gets closer, she said.

Collaborating with the Churchill County Senior Center, Tobin has been able to secure the services of their Aging and Disability Resource Center Specialist, Sherri Herringshaw.

"I am very excited to be able to offer our seniors and those under 60 with disabilities these services again," Tobin said.

Herringshaw said she considers her job a one-stop resource center for seniors and for those under 60 who have disabilities. She can help a client find out what resources they are eligible for and help them apply for those resources.

"Some seniors don't know that they might be eligible for supplemental Social Security in addition to their regular social security. I can help them find out if they qualify and help them with applications," Herringshaw said.

Herringshaw will be at the senior center in Lovelock on Sept. 9. Call (775) 423-7096 to schedule an appointment with Herringshaw on her next visit.

Herringshaw said she would be available probably once a month in the Lovelock center or clients could travel to her office in Fallon for appointments.

"If seniors make their appointments on the days the senior van goes to Fallon, we can take them to their appointment," Tobin said.

The senior van is scheduled to travel to Fallon on Sept. 11 and Oct. 9.

As you can see, Tobin will stay busy for the rest of her time at the senior center. She says she plans to stay busy after retiring also. She is a consultant with the Juuva Company and will be selling nutritional supplements. Interested persons can familiarize themselves with her products by visiting her website www.juuva.biz/btobin.

In addition she will look into volunteering around town and possibly with AmeriCorps, she said.
