TMCC's Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program to offer new degree in 2015

A new transferable A.S. degree is planned, and enlarged facility will provide capacity for additional cohort

RENO - Nursing is a top in-demand career field in Nevada, and Truckee Meadows Community College is in line with the state's need for new nurses, growing in capacity and being recognized for its excellent professors. Highlights of the program's growth include:

• The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree will soon take the place of the Associate of

Applied Science (A.A.S.)

• A new facility that is to be ready for Fall 2015 will allow a fifth cohort to be offered.

• Nursing professors Rosemary Rinaldi and Dr. Ellen House are speaking at a national conference.

Rinaldi and House will be presenting TMCC's clinical assessment tool at the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (N-OADN) convention that takes place on Friday -Sunday, Nov. 14-16 in St. Louis, Mo.

The Associate of Science (A.S.) in Nursing will be offered starting in fall of 2015, to take the place of the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), the current degree graduates receive. "Associate of Science is considered a more transferable degree to bachelor's programs," said Jody Covert, director of the Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program at TMCC. "The general education required for the A.S. degree prepares students to more easily articulate into the R.N. to B.S.N. program at a university."

Once the new Health Science Center is completed, the nursing program will have capacity for a fifth cohort of students - one additional cadre. TMCC Health Science Center is the new name for what has been called the High Tech Center at Redfield, located on Wedge Parkway in south Reno. Redfield has been, since 2005, a collaborative campus between TMCC and the University of Nevada, Reno.

The south Reno campus, a 34,500-square-foot facility, is being remodeled and enlarged to house the complete nursing program. Ground is being broken in November 2014 for a new 17,000-square-foot building that will connect to the existing structure with an interior corridor. Covert hopes to be in the new center for the 2015 fall semester.

"It will be so student-focused and student-centered with great places for students to study together, an amazing simulation lab, large classrooms and a computer lab for online assessments," Covert said.

The nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. For more information or to apply to TMCC's Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program, call the department at (775) 673-7115.
