WINNEMUCCA - During the spring of 2009, former local resident Hank Thompson, son of Dan and Gail Thompson, was successfully recruited by top-ten engineering school Purdue University to continue his studies at the graduate level.
Thompson studied under adviser Arvind Raman, a mechanical engineering professor who is highly regarded in the nanotechnology community, mainly for his work in atomic force microscopy (AFM). Thompson primarily focused on electrostatic AFM to study carbon nanotube-polymer composites and noncontact AFM to study bitumen, the binding substance used in asphalt.
Thompson successfully defended his thesis at the beginning of June and is currently working on two additional articles, giving him three publications in total. During his tenure at Purdue, Thompson obtained a cumulative GPA of 3.96 and also competed in cycling competitions under the Purdue banner.
The search for post-graduate employment continues but, according to his family, Thompson remains positive that his time spent at Purdue will greatly aid him in his search.
