WINNEMUCCA - It's been some time since most people automatically knew what the phrase "banker's hours" meant.
At the time this photo was taken of the First National Bank building, which was about 1920, everybody knew. Bank hours were from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - period. You had to do your banking in those hours only.
Some banks did provide businesses with night deposit privileges. That was it. There were other banks in town, but they all operated under the same time plan. Ordinary people were pretty much stuck in the 10 til three time frame.
To be fair to the bankers, imagine doing all the maintenance of their accounts with large ledgers and somebody with good clear penmanship.
Every entry was done carefully by hand. That was the rule during this time and for decades in the future. So, the banks might be open for those short hours but the work continued for hours beyond public access. Better technology changed banks and banker's hours.
