BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Once a year the Battle Mountain Arts Presenters bring Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) to Battle Mountain for the enjoyment of the community.
This is a great opportunity to enrich the lives of the children in Battle Mountain, giving them a real experience of working in the theatrical arts. They learn about several different opportunities theatre has to offer - directing and production, acting, singing, costuming and scenic design.
MTC has existed for 40 years, and this year they will have worked with children in more than 1,200 communities across the U.S., plus 17 countries.
Performances of Jim Caron's "The Tortoise Versus the Hare" took place at the Battle Mountain Civic Center on Saturday, April 6, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. This classic tale has it all - lizards, snakes, frogs, weasels, a ferret, a tortoise and a hare, and an entire family of bunnies. The story tells of the rivalry between the green animals (reptiles) and the brown animals (mammals) before the race. When a baby bunny gets lost, the brown and green animals forget about their color differences and join together in a search for the lost bunny. In the end the tortoise and the hare learn a lesson with all the animals of Sandy Bottoms, where they live, that reminded their community that "color is just a color, decorated skin" and everyone lived together happily.
This year MCT sent Sara Turner and Cayce Crowder as the production staff to work with students in Battle Mountain. After an entire week of rehearsal - every day, all day - at the civic center, the cast put on a stellar performance for an audience of parents, grandparents and friends.
This year the cast consisted of the following local students: KayEllen Edgar, Jillian Bisiaux, Madison Vinson, Alanna Schoner, Halle Rogers, Ashlynn Newkirk, Kylie Ueland, Angelica Posadas, Sierra Pittman, Kyle Wilson, Ashlyn Littlefield, Sarah Markel, Valaree Jones, Diane Drown, Aubrie Schmidt, Rachel Updike, DJ Black, Katrina Brickner, Emily Harvey, Krysta Lemaire, Jolena Ayers, Joey Drown, Brooklynn Glazier, Katelyn Harvey, Emily Lemaire, Rylee Schmidt, Alyssa Ueland, and Raelin Walker.
The students, along with MCT production staff, created programs to hand out to all guests. The programs listed the actors and actresses, along with sponsors that help Battle Mountain Arts Presenters bring the theatre to Battle Mountain every year. Sponsors include ArtWorks.org, Montana Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Nevada Arts Council, Montana Cultural Trust, Barrick, Goldcorp, Newmont and Lander County Convention and Tourism.
