WINNEMUCCA - Ed and Ernestine Stock operated the Quarter Circle Y Ranch in Paradise Valley starting in 1890 until 1930. This picture shows the ranch about 1894.
The older house in the background was the original ranch house and is much older, probably 1860s or so. This was the real Wild West. Most problems, even serious medical needs, had to be solved at home. Help was a long way away, and by buggy or wagon the trip could be more damaging than the disease!
The man in the picture by the horse is Mr. Stock. A successful rancher, he was able to build the newer house! And he would have paid in cash to do it. There were very few mortgages or lenders then, a real achievement for the time.
