The constant battle for truth

By Bob Beetler

When Ben Franklin was asked what kind of government we were being given, He replied, "A Republic, if you can keep it." But we haven't kept it. It has become a Democracy, which will not work without a people of strong moral character. President John Adams said, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Sadly, we have left our moorings to be "free" to sin with impunity. A discerning people know the truth that "The wicked walk on every side when the vilest of men are exalted" (Psa.12:8).

Nearly a hundred years ago President Teddy Roosevelt said, "Americanism means the virtues of courage, honor, justice, truth, sincerity and hardihood - the virtues that made America. The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living and the get-rich-quick theory of life." Aren't we manifesting the very things that he said would destroy America? Read Isaiah 33:11 and think about it. Nations that forget God are doomed (Psa.9:17).

Eighty years ago President Herbert Hoover said, "Menaced by collectivist trends, we must seek revival of our strength in the spiritual foundations which are the bedrock of our republic. Democracy is the outgrowth of the religious conviction of the sacredness of every human life. On the religious side, its highest embodiment is the Bible; on the political side, the Constitution." How tragic that the present White House occupant apparently believes in collectivism; and his direction for America defies both the Bible and the Constitution, which he swore to uphold and defend.

A man from the Democrat machine in Chicago was asked, "How do you expect to win this election"? He reportedly said, "Money, muscle, and neutralize the opposition." The latter is subtly and effectively being done by the mainstream media. Some of the "muscle" is the Attorney General who is now suing a state for requiring voters to have photo I.D. He has also sued the state of Arizona for protecting their citizens against the border invasion of illegals from many countries: criminals and terrorists among them. This administration refuses to enforce laws they don't like, and tramples on the 10th Amendment. So, to win the election, they seem to be counting on fraud. One Communist strategy says: "It's not who votes that counts, but who counts the votes. You just keep counting until you've got enough." Could this possibly explain Minnesota's Senate race in 2010?

Recalling the1960 election, political pundits knew it would be close. Whoever won Illinois would be president. Some Democrats in Chicago had registered ahead as Republicans; then submitted their names to be poll watchers. No Chicago precincts reported until all downstate were in. Then they knew how many they needed. Daley allegedly called Kennedy in the middle of the night and said, "With a little luck, I think we can pull this off for you." Nixon was told the truth of this, but decided not to challenge, as he felt it would tear up the country.

I recently heard someone in a public place say that President Reagan gave us a 3 trillion dollar deficit. Here is the truth from the OMB. During his eight years, the deficit increased by 1.4 trillion, not 3 trillion. But that is only part of the truth. As Tennyson said, "A half-truth is ever the blackest of lies." Reagan reminded us, "The president can't spend a dime." Congress is given that authority. He had a liberal Democrat Congress whose budget always expanded a bloated bureaucracy and welfare system. Reagan had to sign it in order to get urgently needed funds to meet the growing Soviet threat (thanks to a weak Jimmy Carter). He pleaded with Congress for a line item veto in order to cut this reckless domestic spending. He pleaded for a balanced budget, but the Democrat Congress was the roadblock (like Harry Reid's Senate is now). Do you remember that this Congress hindered Reagan from stopping the Communist takeover of Nicaragua? They even tried to get something against him to impeach him. Do you remember when the communists invaded and took over the government in Grenada? Reagan had the Marines there within 24 hours and threw them out. Do you remember that Iran had some Americans held hostage under Carter? The day after Reagan was inaugurated, Iran released them. And Reagan stopped Qaddafi in his tracks. No more saber rattling.
