Cocoons such as these can be found in many canyons throughout Pershing County during the spring. This photo was taken in Dun Glen Canyon approximately 10 miles northeast of Mill City. Pershing County Extension Educator Steve Foster identified this photo as probably a tent caterpillar cocoon. According to the Washington State University Extension, the caterpillars have orange and black markings. After approximately six to eight weeks the caterpillars turn into light brown, stout-bodied moths.[[In-content Ad]]
