Telephone scam targets local citizens

Phone scammers are at it again in Humboldt County. Sheriff's officials said there were two more scam victims in recent weeks. One person immediately recognized the caller as a scammer, and then later reported the incident to the HCSO.

Last month, a local senior citizen was the target of a scam in which she lost a substantial amount of money,

A big win in the form of a car or lottery money lures victims in, and the scammers then ask the victim for money to pay taxes or other fees before they can collect their prize. Undersheriff Curtiss Kull said the callers use local information to add validity to their claims. In one instance, the scammer used Ed Kilgore's name to convince a victim of the legitimacy of their scheme.

"Absolutely no local or federal law enforcement agency is going to solicit funds via the telephone," said Kull. He urged citizens to use caution if they receive a call from someone claiming to be in law enforcement and asking for money. Anyone who may have received a phone call or has information is encouraged to call Undersheriff Kull at (775) 623-6419.
