Teams from all over Nevada and surrounding states descended on Elko July 10 - 12 for the annual Safety Olympiad, an event that tests mine rescue teams on skills ranging from confined space rescue, ropes/rigging, hazardous materials, medical care and fire, among others. Participating teams included two nearby Newmont sites, Phoenix and Twin Creeks. The Phoenix team took home second place in the B Flight main event on Saturday, July 12; Thunder Basin (Wyoming) took first and Coeur Rochester took third place. The team's trainer, Kerry Tuckett, earned an award for his score on the trainer test. Twin Creeks Mine Rescue took home third place in the rigging/ropes event on Friday, July 11 and placed third overall. The team also placed third in A Flight in the main event; North Antelope Rochelle (Wyoming) took second and Round Mountain Gold took home first place. This year's event was sponsored and organized by Barrick Cortez.
