Sydney Jackson 'Jack' Means

Today we all lost a true American hero. Jack went peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 12:45 a.m. Jack was born on Aug. 22 in the year 1922 to Sydney Samuel Means and Dovie Agnes Presley in Heavener, Okla.

Jack lived a full eventful life of 92 years; we couldn't ask for anything more. Veteran of WW II, Korea, and Vietnam Training Command. Civil Air Patrol, VFW, Dance Bands and U.S. Navy Band playing the trombone. He worked for Cal-Trans 32 years as a foreman. He was in the U.S. Navy as one of the very first "Seabees" in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, when the Japanese invaded the island and hopped all the way to Hiroshima, Japan, where the atomic bomb was dropped, clearing roads, building airstrips, with the 51st Naval military services as a Construction Battalion.

Jack retired from Naval military services as a master chief petty officer, with an arm's length of service strips a mile long it seemed, after a career of 37 years.

Then when the U.S. Navy said it's time to go, he re-enlisted in the California Army National Guard for two years and left with the rank of sergeant first class. He then finally "retired" in southern Oregon to garden, raise fruit and remodel homes to sell with his wife to keep busy. Jack was very active serving in the church as well as doing maintainence for the church. There was nothing that Jack couldn't build, fix or maintain.

Jack is survived by his wife of a very blessed and wonderful marriage of 61 years to Barbara Gail Means (St. Clair), sister Sandra Anstine, daughter from a previous marriage Marlee Daniels, sons Michael Means (Claudia), Doug Means, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sons Monte Means and Curtis Means. Jack dearly loved the Lord Jesus Christ, his Savior and redeemer, his wife, children, great grandkids and friends both near and far.

The Means Family wishes to thank Pastor Stace Cupples, Father Jose Sobarzo, Angel and Maria Cardenas, Claudia Means, friends and family and the nursing and medical staff at HGH for all the aid and assistance for making this transition as smooth and gentle as possible.[[In-content Ad]]
