LOVELOCK - Experts agree that running and walking are excellent aerobic exercises. Both are low-cost activities that can elevate mood, boost energy, decrease blood pressure and decrease the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Training for run/walk events is also a great way to get in shape for the summer.
Lovelock has two events coming up that will provide participants with the opportunity to support good causes and get in shape.
Just around the corner on May 5, the Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department Relay for Life team has organized its third annual Run for Love. The event starts at 9 a.m. in the Pershing County Courthouse Park with three distances to engage all levels of walkers and runners.
According to run organizers, there will be a 1-K run/walk along the Elmhurst loop; a five-mile run/walk through the Sand Hill loop and an eight-mile run/walk along the Lone Mountain Road loop.
Pre-registration fees are $15. Pre-registration forms can be picked up at Two Stiffs gas station and Wells Fargo Bank. Registration on the day of the race is $25.
"All of the money raised goes toward Relay's overall goal of $25,000. The Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department's team is hosting the run," Lovelock Relay co-chair Valaree Olivas said.
"All teams are welcome to come down and fund raise," she added.
Sparky the Fire Dog and the Coca-Cola Bear will also be at the event, Olivas said.
The nonprofit group Grads Giving Back has organized the Mustang Stampede 5-K Run on June 8, the day of the 96th Annual Alumni Banquet and Ball. Registration for the Stampede begins at 7 a.m. that morning and the race begins at 8 a.m. Registration for the Stampede can be made at Wizard's Floral in Lovelock and online at www.mustang5k,weebly.com. Registration fees can also be paid online.
Registration fees are $30 for individuals or $25 for Pershing County High School Alumni Association (PCHSAA) members.
Grads Giving Back volunteer member Wendy Nelsen said the group is encouraging people to form teams for the event. Teams can register for $25 per person.
"It makes it a little more fun to walk as a group. Your team could also dress up in a certain theme at the Stampede. That would be a lot of fun," Nelsen said.
"All proceeds are donated to the PCHSAA scholarship fund for graduating PCHS students," Nelsen said.
Nelsen is hoping that some of the area youth will also register for the Stampede.
"We need to do some positive things in our community for our youth and with our youth," Nelsen said.
The group plans to continue the Stampede every year and honor individuals who have shown special interest in the youth of Lovelock. This year's honorees are Mary Ryan, a PCHS music teacher who passed away in 2011, and Lu Thomas, a PCMS teacher assistant, who passed away earlier this year.
"Both of these ladies dedicated their lives to the youth of our community," Nelsen said.
The Stampede will be dedicated to them and the donation to the scholarship fund will be made in their names, Nelsen said.
Each year the group will choose a new honoree for the event, Nelsen said.
Grads Giving Back has many events planned for the day. The Lions Club will cook a pancake breakfast that morning; there will be live music and kid-friendly games, Nelsen said.
Nelsen said that all alumni attending the ball should be at the park by 10 a.m. for the official class reunion photos by Dashing Photography. They have also arranged to have tours of the high school for all returning alumni.
Other events taking place are the 10-year reunion party for the Class of 2003 in the park at noon.
The 96th Annual Alumni Banquet and Ball will take place later that same evening at the Pershing County Community Center with cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30. p.m. A dance will be open to the public after the dinner.
