WINNEMUCCA - This year the Humboldt Sun's Giving Tree project produced 70 angels, all of whom were adopted and received gifts.
General Manager Holly Rudy-James said that the Sun has been supporting a Giving Tree since 2002.
The community nominates senior citizens who are in need during the holidays, then members of the community are invited to come in to the Sun office to adopt an angel. Each angel ornament on the Christmas tree has the gender and gift suggestions for each senior. The adopting person purchases and wraps the gift for the senior and returns it to the Sun office for delivery to the senior.
Rudy-James stated that the Sun ran ads about the Giving Tree after Halloween asking for nominations and that the adoptions were available the Friday after Thanksgiving. Gifts were due in by Dec. 16.
She said that the Nevada Department of Transportation "Santas" delivered gifts to northern Humboldt County on Dec. 19. Sun employees Alex Holm and Sierra Frazier delivered gifts locally on Dec. 21. Rudy-James stated that front office employees Kathi Wolfsteller and Veronica Messmann worked hard to put the seniors' names on the tree and get them adopted.
As far as the Sun continuing the Giving Tree project Rudy-James said, "We plan on continuing to do so. The need is not going away; we just hope we didn't miss any of the needy seniors this year."
Rudy-James encourages community members to think about those seniors in need for nomination for future Giving Trees.
