WINNEMUCCA - There are still over 40 cards with information on Christmas needs for seniors on the Humboldt Sun's Angel Tree for Seniors. We need your help! The names come from organizations that work with seniors, and from other community members who are aware of seniors who might otherwise not be remembered at Christmas time.
Remembering a senior at Christmas is easy. The Angel Tree cards have information on the age and gender of the senior and some cards include specific gift ideas, and even favorite colors. You can choose a card with specifics, or one that's general if you have some great ideas of your own.
Mendi Fayal, activities director for Harmony Manor, said, "The seniors' names we gave the Sun are people who don't have family members in the area, and don't have anyone who comes regularly to visit."
Fayal noted that sugar free candies are always welcome, as are crossword puzzles, modeling clay, and other craft items. She said the folks from Harmony Manor take the seniors shopping once a month at Walmart, so a Walmart gift card is the easiest gift of all. Barbara Sealy, with Winnemucca Food Bank, said another great gift idea is a grocery store or restaurant gift card.
Maxine Smart, tribal vice chairman in McDermitt, said of the names they sent to the Sun, "A lot of our folks also don't have close family members, and many live alone; they would so appreciate being remembered at Christmas time." She added, "We put together a cookie tray for each senior, and try to help in other ways, such as a coat drive in November, but more help is needed because our resources are very limited."
Winnemucca Publishing General Manager Holly Rudy James said this is the seventh year the Sun has gathered information on needy seniors for the angel tree.
"Every year, we see the number of names, and worry a little that not enough people will respond with Christmas gifts for the seniors, but every year this generous community comes through!"
Please pick up a card from the angel tree at the Humboldt Sun on Grass Valley Road; Extra Christmas spirit is guaranteed! The gifts need to be returned to the Sun by next Friday, Dec.14, at 3 p.m.
