WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt Sun staff writer Heather Singer was recently recognized by the Lander County School Board for her in depth coverage of Lander County School District issues.

A reception was held Oct. 26 and Singer received a certificate of recognition for being nominated for the Nevada Association of School Boards (NASB) Media Award for Outstanding Education Reporting. She is one of four people in Lander County who were nominated for different NASB contest categories.

Singer will compete with other news reporters throughout the state for the NASB award. She was also nominated and recognized in 2010.

Winners will be announced Nov. 19 at an awards banquet at the Atlantis in Reno. Lander County School Board Chair Susan Davis will announce the winners at the Nov. 30 school board meeting.

The winners were chosen by an NASB committee. Davis, who sits on the NASB Board of Directors, and Lander County School Board member Anna Penola selected the nominees and presented the certificates.

A UNR journalism graduate with eight and a half years spent as a reporter, Singer was selected because of her fair, accurate and balanced stories, said Davis.

"Heather changed many of our opinions about reporters," said Davis. "From the beginning, she made it her business to get to know the superintendent and board members to get our input on the elements at board meetings for her articles. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Heather was meticulous in her reporting skills, rarely misquoting anyone she interviewed."

Penola agreed.

"I feel that Heather gives tons of time and effort to tell the whole story and never gives up on reaching the people for quotes and their side of the story," said Penola. "She never misses a story."

Winnemucca Publishing Managing Editor David Gouger said he is grateful to have Singer on staff.

"Heather works tirelessly to make the Bugle a great newspaper," he said. "She cares deeply about Lander County and wants to make sure readers are informed about what is going on in their community."

Singer has served as a staff writer for the Battle Mountain Bugle for two years. She also writes articles for the Humboldt Sun and the Lovelock Review-Miner. In addition to covering education stories, Singer writes about county government, crime and human interest stories. She has also worked for the Lahontan Valley News and the Daily Sparks Tribune. She interned at the Elko Daily Free Press.

"I am really excited to have been nominated," said Singer. "It has been great working with all of the school board members and the new superintendent."
