WINNEMUCCA - The first day of school causes everything from anxiety in students to excitement about the start of a new chapter.
The first day of school can seem a bit ominous. Lowry Leadership was there to lessen the burden of the first day.
Leadership students wore buttons to signal to students that they can ask them for help. The school's interior is decorated with "Tips for Freshman" that include advice such as "respect your elders" and "don't wear heels if you can't walk in them."
To help everyone feel included, Leadership also put on a different lunchtime activity every week day, like an obstacle course where students had to literally jump through hoops while holding an egg on a spoon, or an art contest where students had 10 minutes to design a poster.
Leadership class worked the two weeks leading up to the school year in hopes their efforts would make students feel more welcome.
Their efforts were successful. Freshman Kaity Samples says she was intimidated going into this year, but by participating in the lunchtime activities, she "felt less isolated and feels involved in the high school."
Kaity admits that "the Leadership program has already impacted my life positively, even though it was only my first week."
Other freshmen mimicked Kaity's excitement, such as Annaleise Gabica, saying that, although she was nervous and overwhelmed her first day, "all the Leadership students were extremely friendly."
On the other end of the spectrum, seniors are beginning to reflect on how Leadership has impacted their overall high school careers.
Senior Eric Brooks swears "all my favorite activities in high school have been put on by Leadership."
The Leadership class, led by Taylor LaTray as student body president and adviser Mrs. Grady, plans on continuing to positively impact students' lives this school year.
Maeve Donovan is a senior at Lowry High School.
