WINNEMUCCA - For the second year in a row the Humboldt County Rodeo Club had one of its members win a championship at the 27th annual Silver State International Rodeo.
A year ago Cole Stremler gave the hometown crowd something to cheer about, winning the saddle bronc title. This year, his brother Clay Stremler won the same exact championship in front of the hometown Winnemucca crowd.
Stremler finished second in the first go around with 68 points and was third in the second go around with 67 points to place second going into the short go. He won the SSIR championship on Saturday, as he was the only rider to record a score in the short go with a ride of 63 points.
In addition, Stremler competed in the team roping, along with fellow Humboldt County teammate Josh Dufurrena. The duo finished 27th in the first go around in a time of 21.57 seconds but did not record a time in the second go around and failed to make the short go.
Savannah Montero came .06 seconds away from winning the goat tying championship and finished second. She recorded a time of 8.81 seconds in the short go to move up one spot after entering the top 15 finals in third. Montero stuck around in the top of the standings from the start, placing second in the first go at 8.09. She was 14th in the second go around in a time of 9.34.
She also participated in pole bending, where she was 43rd in the first go at 22.845 and timed in at 27.157. In barrel racing, she was 59th with a time of 16.998 after the first go but in the second go around, she knocked down a barrel, ending her chance at making the top 15.
DeeAnna Pasquale placed fifth in girls cutting with 212 points, after entering the top 15 finals in fourth. Pasquale finished fifth in the first go around with 72.5 points and was sixth in the second go around at 71. In the short go, she scored 68.5 points to place sixth.
Pasquale was busy at the SSIR as well, competing in the breakaway roping, pole bending and barrel racing. She placed 54th in barrel racing in the first go at 16.931 but knocked over a barrel in the second go around to finish with a time of 22.135. Pasquale timed in at 27.397 in the first go around of pole bending after knocking down a pole. She knocked down two poles in the second go around to finish with a time of 32.981.
Josh Harrer had bad luck in the short go around, as he did not record a time and finished 13th overall. The McDermitt High School graduate was 18th after the first go around with a time of 14.79. He jumped to sixth place in the second go around with a time of 6.00 to be fifth after two go-arounds.
Utah won the team championship with 603 points. California was second at 544.50 and Nevada was third at 341.50. Idaho finished fourth with 329 points and Oregon rounded out the top five with 286 points. Completing the standings was Montana (226), Washington (127), Alberta, Canada (81), Arizona (32) and British Columbia (17).
Nevada's Aspyn Civil was the girls all-round champion and California's Caden Farquer was the all-around boys winner.
