Stephen Dean Sortor

Tragically our dear Stephen passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011 in a drowning at his home in Phoenix, Arizona. Stephen was born in Reno, Nevada on February 11, 1964. He was lovingly received by his proud parents, Verl and Joann Sortor. Two years later his brother Michael joined the family. When Stephen was a young boy, his family moved to Winnemucca, NV. He and his brother spent many summers visiting grandparents in Idaho. Stephen graduated from Lowry High School in 1982. He was a member of Pep Club and Spanish Club. Stephen attended the University of Nevada Reno where he majored in Finance and Psychology. Stephen enjoyed the outdoors. Stephen entered the hotel management industry and built a successful career. At the time of his passing, he was employed by the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Stephen’s work ethic, integrity, and compassion earned him the respect and friendship of his co-workers. Stephen’s warm heart and generous nature endeared him to many. He supported many good organizations like the Tempe Zoo. Stephen’s smile was like sunshine and his presence exuded genuine kindness. He had a great love for his nephews and they adored him. His positive influence will serve as a lifetime guide for them.

 

Stephen was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Joann; maternal grandparents, John and Opal Marshall and paternal grandparents, Howard and Ruby Sortor. He is survived by his father, Verl Sortor, brother Michael, sister-in-law Maelene all from Winnemucca; his nephews Michael A. Sortor of Kodiak, Alaska and Chase Sortor who is currently serving in the United States Marines. Stephen is also survived by many friends including longtime friend Matthew Ballard and aunts, uncles, and many cousins.

 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
