Carson City - Nevada State Health Division authorities praised four Winnemucca and
Lovelock child care centers for hosting vaccination clinics on site.
On July 24 and 25, Zion Lutheran Preschool, Learning Ladder Preschool, Carmel's Day Care and Kinder Castle Child Development Center provided space and handled permission slips so that the children could receive all their childhood vaccinations, and day care teachers could be immunized against whooping cough, also known as pertussis. The outreach clinics were held in response to low immunization rates throughout Nevada. On the day of the clinics, parents had the option to be with their children during the immunization.
"Recently there have been whooping cough outbreaks all across the country, including Nevada," said State Health Officer Tracey D. Green, M.D. "It was great to see these facilities welcome us so warmly and play an active role in the health of the children, and as a result, in the health of the entire community."
"A positive side effect of these clinics is that it reminds all parents to check with their personal physicians to ensure their children's vaccination records are current," said Erin Seward, Nevada immunization program manager. "Raising awareness and educating the public is vitally important."
In total, nearly 60 vaccinations were issued during the two days. "We consider that a success," said Jo Malay, community health nursing manager.
