State EMS program inspires students, receives award

CARSON CITY - The Nevada Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) Program of the Division of Public and Behavioral Health recently received the Excellence in Action Award of Merit from the Nevada Association for Career and Technical Education.

The award is given annually to an individual or organization for outstanding achievement in the field of career and technical training.

The Nevada EMS Program oversees emergency medical care, ambulance transportation and trauma care for Nevadans by providing technical assistance, consultation, training and regulatory oversight throughout the state.  Their training component includes supporting high school students who are involved in health science or public safety programs by providing equipment and education.

"On behalf of the entire EMS team we really appreciate the recognition," said Erin Seward, EMS acting program manager. "We know it's important to support the youth by educating them in the EMS field, fire protection and law enforcement."

"EMS provides strong support for the students," said Randi Hunewill, the Education Programs Supervisor who nominated Nevada EMS for the award. "They share their equipment trailer stocked with items such as cervical collars, backboards, moulage supplies, airway mannequins, gloves and more.  This allows students who are interested in EMT (emergency medical technician) careers to practice in a very realistic way."

Hunewill nominated EMS based on their assistance with writing state standards and assessments for the high school EMT programs, keeping them within curriculum requirements for the national registry.
