BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Everyone is happy that warmer weather is here. We had a very cold winter this year. The daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, and crocuses are starting to bloom. I hope they get some rain to encourage them to bloom.
I remember when we worked at the Whitehouse Ranch many years ago. The desert was afire with Indian Paintbrush. This flower is a beautiful orange-red color. That is all one could see for miles. We trimmed our apple trees. I have a bouquet of branches in the house. I am waiting for them to have some blossoms on them. They are from the golden delicious apples.
In February, the seniors had a special lunch and entertainment for Valentine's Day. Oliver Hammersmark sang a song accapella in Norwegian. He later told us the song was about a young man building his house between the mountains of Norway and the ocean. He really enjoyed the beauty of the land and being able to see the fish in the sea. Oliver and his daughter Michelle took a trip to Norway on the boat a few years ago. He sang this same song on the tour boat to much applause. Dorothy and Bob Beetler also sang "Pearly Gates." Their voices blend very well together. Everyone enjoyed the special songs.
We celebrated Mardi Gras with the kings' cake and some colorful beads.
St. Patrick's Day brought out all of our green shirts. Everyone came to enjoy corn beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots. Green cream puffs were served for dessert. Not many seniors got pinched that day.
Joyce Gronning has a display of her paintings at the Battle Mountain Museum. The museum is open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. I hope everyone will find some time to enjoy her display. Joyce has been a main mover in the art club.
Ervin Thompson has been buying feeder steers to put out on the pasture this summer. We are hoping for some rain to get the grass started. The price of beef has remained high. It has been a good chance for cattlemen to get ahead financially. I am the main feeder of calves when he is gone.
We would like to welcome Betty Stewart to the senior center. Oliver Hammersmark recently celebrated his 85th birthday.
