Spring Break date change

The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees approved a correction to the date for spring break. The 2015 spring break will be March 30 through April 3 - instead of April 6-10.

Kelly Novi, director of innovation for the school district, said spring break will no longer coincide with the Easter calendar, and will make the school calendar more consistent. The date for spring break was originally intended to be on the calendar beginning March 30 but was inadvertently marked as April 6. Novi said he could not account for the discrepancy other than spring break for this year fell during the week of April 6. The calendar had gone through committee, all the schools and the school board and the error was not noted.

Novi said he had not heard of spring break plans being disrupted, and board chair John Seeliger said he also had not heard of plans being disrupted. Seeliger said the few teachers who brought up the discrepancy said the agreement was to have the third quarter finished with a week off before beginning the fourth quarter. With an April 6 start date, spring break would have occurred in the second week of the fourth quarter.

March 25, 26 and 27 are scheduled to be half-days for parent-teacher conferences. Report cards are issued on March 27, with the nine-week quarter ending on March 20.

The board approved the change and the calendar will be resubmitted to the state for approval.
