The McDermitt High School track and field team will be taking two of its athletes to the NIAA State Championships this weekend at Carson High School in Carson City.
Va Draunidalo earned the runner-up spot in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches. She was tied with Wells' Mikayla Rodriguez. Smith Valley's Kellie Rogaczewski won the event at 4-10. Draunidalo, a sophomore, also finished 11th in the discus with a toss of 70-4.
Draunidalo is scheduled to compete in the high jump at 3 p.m. on Friday.
She will be joined by fellow sophomore Andrea Smart. Smart placed third in the shot put with a throw of 30-9. That toss was her best of the year by more than three feet. Owyhee's Kelli Catches won the event at 31-2.50 and Sierra Lutheran's Sabrina Ronato was second at 20-11.25.
Smart threw another season best in the discus at 80-0 to finish 11th.
The Division IV shot put finals is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs finished 11th in the team standings with 15 points. Sierra Lutheran ran away with the team title with 186 points. Wells was second at 94 and Eureka was third at 91. Smith Valley (84) and Sage Ridge (72) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Brendan Wilson competed for McDermitt on the boys side and was 14th in the 1,600 meters in a time of 5 minutes, 34.60 seconds. The senior was 18th in the discus with a toss of 71-9.
Sierra Lutheran cruised to the regional championship with 189 points. Virginia City was second at 137 and Sage Ridge (75) was third. Whittell (63) and Smith Valley (47) rounded out the top five.
The NIAA State Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Carson High School in Carson City. Action gets underway at 3 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.
