Sober Seniors selling holiday wreaths and Pete's chorizos

Funds raised will go toward high school graduation party

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Sober Seniors, a group of students and parents dedicated to holding a sober Battle Mountain High School graduation party, is selling holiday wreaths and Pete's chorizos to raise funds.

The wreaths went on sale in October and will be sold until Dec. 8 and several types can be purchased including a classic, a cross, a candy cane, a swag and a centerpiece.

They are $25 each and those who wish to purchase one can contact Paula Tomera at the Battle Mountain Chamber of Commerce at (775) 635-8245 or any high school senior.

Sober Seniors will also be selling them at the St. John Bosco Catholic Church Christmas Bazaar and the Community Christmas Festival, both to be held on Dec. 8.

The group will be selling Pete's chorizos at the events as well. The chorizos have been on sale since June and will be sold up until graduation. The types are regular and spicy and they are $30 for five pounds. Those who wish to purchase chorizos can contact Barbara Synek at (775) 635-8938.

So far $22,000 has been raised for the party and the groups is hoping to raise $35,000 with most of the money going toward door prizes that will include computers, iPods, televisions, mini-refrigerators, cameras, scientific calculators and appliances.

Sober Seniors is planning to hold a Bingo fundraiser at a future date that has not yet been determined, said group Vice President Courtney Tomera. To also raise money, the group has cleaned up after several events at the Battle Mountain Civic Center. The organization also earns $10,000 each year from Newmont to clean up Willow Creek Reservoir year-round.

The party will be held in the high school gym and will include food, games, possibly a mechanical bull, blow up toys and a photo booth. It starts at around 9 p.m. and then the students get locked down around 10:30 p.m. with the kids having to stay until sometime in the morning, said Courtney Tomera.

The party usually attracts most of the seniors. Each senior can bring a friend with prior approval and the friend has to be a high school student, added Courtney Tomera.

"It keeps the kids safe and sober at graduation," she said. "They have the opportunity to win prizes that could possibly help them with their futures."

Sober Seniors also puts on a dessert night at the civic center for parents and seniors in order recognize seniors. In addition to desserts being served, a slide show of the students is shown.

The organization is run by a four member board made up of President Paula Tomera, Vice President Courtney Tomera, Secretary Annette Rochester and Treasurer Barbara Synek.

The group meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. at the chamber office. Seniors and parents are welcome to attend.

Those who would like to donate to Sober Seniors can contact Paula Tomera.
