BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The local Sober Seniors organization will hold a fundraising Bingo night at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Civic Center. The group will be raising money for the end of year graduation party on June 8, said Michele Scovil, president of Sober Seniors.
Bingo cards are 10 games for $10 and $1.50 for daubers. The students will be running a concessions booth selling chili, hotdogs, nachos, chips, soda and candy, said Scovil.
Bingo will go until around 9 p.m. There will be door prizes and a Bingo prize of $50. The prizes were donated by parents and local businesses and consist of gift baskets, gift certificates and kids prizes. Scovil is hoping for a big turnout at the Bingo event, she said.
"Come out and enjoy a night of family fun," said Scovil.
The Sober Seniors group consists of around 30 seniors and parents and its goal is to raise money to hold a sober graduation party at the high school gym to last all night and include games, food and prizes.
In addition to the Bingo night, the group has been doing other things to raise money. Since June, seniors have been cleaning up the Willow Creek Reservoirs to receive a generous donation from Newmont, said Scovil. During the summer, the seniors were out there weekly and starting this month, the students will be out there twice a month during the winter months. Scovil wanted to thank Shar Peterson, senior external relations for Newmont, for organizing the clean-up.
Sober Seniors is also selling Pete's chorizos and started selling them in June. They are being sold in five-pound packages for $30. So far, the group has raised around $4,000, said Scovil.
The group started selling Christmas wreaths in September and will sell them through Nov. 1. Wreaths are $25 each or $35 to ship them as a gift. Sober Seniors is also selling raffle tickets for a jean quilt made by Lisa Andre - six tickets for $5 or $1 each.
Also, to raise money, the Sober Seniors students set up and cleaned up for the Oct. 15 Health Fair at the Civic Center. They will also spend Nov. 6 cleaning up the Civic Center from the Chukar Tournament which will be held Nov. 4 and 5.
During the summer, the students catered two luncheons at the Valmy Power Plant. They prepared and served all of the food, said Scovil. The group is available for clean-ups and catering. Scovil said the group is planning to hold future fundraisers.
